Is our high fat Western diet causing hair loss and could it be reversed?

Western diet and hair loss

Hair loss is known to have a wide range of different causes, and diet has commonly been linked to the health of our locks. However, it isn’t just vitamin and mineral deficiencies which can lead to damage and hair loss; it seems that fat can also play a role.

Now, researchers from the renowned John Hopkins University medical school have discovered a way to potentially reverse the damage. The hope is that the results of the study will help prevent baldness, treat skin disorders and accelerate wound healing one day.

Study proves Western diet is contributing towards hair loss

The recent study by the John Hopkins University was carried out on mice and results were published within the Scientific Reports Journal. It was proven that mice who were fed a high fat and high cholesterol diet, suffered extensive hair loss, discolouration from black to grey, and inflammation of the skin.

While there is no concrete evidence to suggest this is the same with humans, experts do believe a similar process occurs within the human body. Understanding the potential health effects a Western diet can cause is certainly helpful and the researchers have already identified a potential cure.

Experimental compound found to successfully reverse hair loss

After carrying out numerous tests, the researchers discovered an experimental compound was able to successfully reverse the hair loss caused by a high-fat diet. The compound, known as D-PDMP (D-threo-1-phenyl-2-decanoylamino-3-morpholino-1-propanol), was found to reverse hair loss, as well as skin inflammation when fed to the mice.

The scientists say that although they still need to carry out further research to determine the compound’s safety and effectiveness on humans, the findings so far are promising.

When can we expect to see the product on the market?

It’s highly unlike the new compound will be turned into an effective hair loss cure anytime soon. A lot more research and tests need to be carried out before it can even be considered a good hair loss treatment.

There’s also some question as to which types of hair loss the compound will be able to reverse. From what we can gather from the study, the focus is on diet-based hair loss. This is actually one of the least common causes of hair loss, with male pattern baldness and female pattern hair loss the most common types experienced by patients.020 7580 8356
